Strategies of a Professional ETF Trader
Specs: 32 mins, 28 secs | 14.9 MB
ETF (Exchange Traded Funds) trading strategies have become more popular in the last couple of years, but why? And what's working best in these market conditions? In this episode we talk with ETF trader Deron Wagner who discusses how he uses trendlines, moving averages and volume patterns to spot opportunities in the markets. He also tells us how he uses Relative Strength (not RSI) to spot changes in trends. Specifically we talk about how he finds trend reversal breaks and how he confirms if it is a true reversal or a simple blip in a continuing pattern. Deron discusses a specific ETF trade he made recently and what he learned from the outcome. We also discuss how he finds profit target levels and where he sets his stop losses based on specific criteria. Finally we talk about how he manages risk and the amount of capital he will risk on any one trade.

Strategies of a Professional ETF Trader

TraderInterviews.com: Hello everybody. Welcome back to TraderInterviews.com. Thanks very much for joining us for another show this week. We're going to be speaking with Deron Wagner today. A lot of you probably heard of him. I've known Deron for a few years through the Trader's Expos and, of courses, he's got a great service in terms of ETFs and that's what he specializes in and he has written a book about it as well. Deron Wagner: Oh, thanks for having me, Tim.

TraderInterviews.com: ETFs, let's talk about first why you were drawn to ETFs and why you kind of made it your specialty. What drew you to them?

Deron Wagner: Well, prior to ETFs, I was sector trading individual stocks where I would look at a particular sector such as semiconductors and I would buy five or six individual stocks within that sector if I thought that that sector was the one showing the most strength. And that worked out well except that the commission cost at the time became very high buying a basket of stocks. It also became challenging to manage a basket of individual stocks. So, when I first discovered ETFs and the fact that I could do the same thing through the ease of buying one security. That made a lot of sense to me. And, of course, there's a lot of other benefits as well such as diversification automatically lowers your risk overnight of not having individual stock gapped down 50% on the open. But the biggest reason, I was attracted to it is just the diversification and the ease of getting access to a whole group of stocks through purchasing one security.

TraderInterviews.com: What are your thoughts in some of these two and three times leveraged market movings, ETFs that are available now?

Deron Wagner: Well, there's certainly a lot more choices now than when I began...
